In the context of the current housing crisis and the Society’s own needs, the Society of the Sacred Heart wishes to select an appropriate and experienced partner to deliver its vision and legacy in developing an ‘age friendly’ residential scheme, on part of its lands, to:
• Create a legacy and social dividend for a community in which the Society has had a presence for over 150 years
• Provide ‘age-friendly’ accommodation for both the ageing members of the Society and other older members of the local community
• Provide for the Society and Sophia, subject to agreement, to acquire up to 24 units (including any Part V requirements)
The Society’s decision was taken in the context of Ireland’s national housing crisis and a shortage of appropriate housing for a growing older population. Ireland’s population is ageing, and the proportion of older persons is rising rapidly. According to the CSO’s 2020 estimates, the number of persons aged 65 years and older is 720,100 and has increased by over 40% since Census 2011.
The Society’s own experience reflects challenges in wider Irish society. The housing scheme will provide a housing mix for older people including those on the Local Authority Housing List (subject to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council consent), a small number of ageing sisters already living in the area, and other local residents who may choose to relocate in the locality. The new development needs to be sensitive to the homes of neighbouring residents.
Note: The proposed project will not impact on the educational facilities associated with the Mount Anville Schools, including the extensive sports facilities. The new development will be located at Lower Kilmacud Road removed from the Schools and their facilities.
